The Anguish of Our Heroes

I finished this painting yesterday (April 18, 2020). It's based on a photograph seen online that depicts a physician being comforted by a nurse. The physician is distressed and terribly sad after losing a corona-virus patient. The location of the hospital is Cremona, Italy - in the Lombardy region of Italy - an area that has been particularly hard hit by the pandemic. The multiple tragedies depicted and implied by this picture generated profound sadness in me while working on the painting. But I make myself remember that these are the true heroes and heroines in our world today. Although we all share their anguish and grief, the painting hopes to celebrate, thank and honor them.
